Time Management & Multi-tasking

Two skills that tend to go hand-in-hand I find important are time management and multi-tasking. To effectively carry out the day from work to home life, it is important to manage each activity while taking on the role to multi-task certain assignments. While currently working as an office manager, I am required to time-manage employees’ workload, as well as my own. This would also entail multi-tasking as I am willing to jump in and assist my co-workers when needed by aiding in their tasks as well as my own. In my everyday life, you can find me keeping myself and my home managed. As a full-time worker, part-time student, and soon-to-be-Mrs., I have to keep everything running efficiently by planning out my time accordingly while simultaneously doing multiple tasks at once. From laundry, dishes, and cleaning, to blocking out study sessions, and to even organizing a wedding; you can see me prioritizing my workload.


Empathy & Listening

I have learned a lot about empathy and listening especially since being a volunteer on the Mission Hospice floor. To empathize with someone’s situation is entirely different from sympathy. That main difference is putting your thoughts, needs, and opinions aside for someone else and listen to what they are trying to communicate. Their words may not outwardly express what they are feeling inside, but to be able to understand on an emotional level can help a lot. Being empathetic naturally, I have been always able to tell when and what a person may feel, and the hospice allowed me to hone that skill along with listening. Listening is really important, especially now when communication is rapidly transitioning from face-to-face to text messages or e-mail. When listening to someone and their situation, allows me to know a person on a deeper level and find a connection that may aid them. I have learned that even if one person can lend an ear as well as being present to someone’s needs, it can mean a lot to that individual; it only takes a moment of time.


Communication

From face-to-face, phone, e-mail, or text messages, I am effective at communicating. I always do my best when it comes to my communication to make sure it’s as unambiguous as possible. With a busy schedule and the position I am in at work, I must be in constant communication to ensure that the needs of myself and everyone are being met in a timely manner. With that being said, I would say this is a skill I am continuously developing, as I have noticed I tend to be straightforward in a way to which it may sound too assertive.
